Supporting Student Mental Health:
Montana Crisis Action School Toolkit on Suicide (CAST-S)
In this 2-hour Zoom training, the presenter will walk through the components of the Montana CAST-S and help schools identify actions they can take to utilize this life-saving tool. In Montana, the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) shows over 10% of Montana students surveyed made a suicide attempt in the past 12 months and 41% reported feeling sad or hopeless, the highest rate ever reported on the Montana YRBS. All school personnel play an important role in supporting student wellness and are vitally important to responding to students experiencing a mental health crisis. In partnership with the University of Montana, Safe Schools Center, the Office of Public Instruction is working to support schools in their efforts to protect students from harm. The Montana Crisis Action School Toolkit on Suicide (Montana CAST-S) was collaboratively developed by the Montana Association of Pediatric Psychiatrists and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)-Montana to assist Montana schools in developing protocols and crisis plans for preventing and addressing youth suicide. The Montana CAST-S is freely available and contains tools, information, and step-by-step guidance.
